Libs kick off pilot program to upgrade community sports facilities

A Marshall Liberal Government will upgrade the Henley Sharks Football Club change rooms which will include female change rooms, umpire’s rooms and medical rooms.

This project will be a modular build and will be delivered in conjunction with the SANFL and the SACA with the potential to support a Netball club through any future club expansion.

“Out dated facilities that are no longer fit for purpose is a common complaint from sports clubs right across South Australia.” Said Shadow Minister for Sport Corey Wingard.

“This will be a pilot project supported by the SANFL, SACA and Netball SA with potential for a future state wide program for more modular builds to deliver the services needed to growing clubs.”

The SANFL and SACA have committed to seek funding from their National Bodies (AFL and Cricket Australia) to partner with a Marshall Liberal Government to deliver these modern modular facilities.

“SANFL is excited at the prospect of being a partner in this project given the potential benefit that can be realised. This is a great opportunity to deliver much needed facilities to football, cricket and netball clubs across the state,” said SANFL CEO Jake Parkinson.

Liberal Candidate for Colton Matt Cowdrey said modernising sporting club amenities will invite more participants and volunteers to Henley, keeping more of our community active and healthy into the future.

“Providing female change rooms at local clubs is something the local community absolutely supports and is constantly raised with me,” said Liberal Candidate for Colton Matt Cowdrey.

“The Henley Sharks are a growing club and last year they established the Henley Woman’s Football Program which saw four women’s teams compete in the SANFL.

“That’s why we will support these women and the Henley Sharks by delivering female change rooms”.

“It’s my understanding that if this upgrade goes ahead, Henley FC intend to share these new facilities with the West Torrens District Cricket Club’s female teams, as well as the Henley Districts Little Athletics club”.

“At the moment the Henley Sharks’ four women’s teams have over 100 players, so with the additional female cricket teams there will be hundreds of women and younger girls in the local community who will benefit”.

“In fact this year they have nominated an extra Under 14 and Under 18 Girls Team to compete in the Adelaide Football League with the intention of fielding a Senior Women’s Team by the 2020 season”.

“This upgrade will provide comfortable and appropriate clubrooms and hopefully will encourage more female players to join the sport and get involved with our local community”.

“We should be doing as much as possible to support and encourage more young females to take part in grass roots sport.”
