Henley Seniors

A Grade Report

It was obviously a disappointing result last week against Modbury.

It was an even first half and I thought things were looking positive when we kicked the first two goals of the 2nd half to lead by three but from there things just went down hill. For the second time in as many weeks, I felt that the opposition just put everything on the line and simply just wanted to win more than us.

As I have said before this competition is so even that if you are 5% down on your preparation and 5% down during the game, you can be beaten by anyone and that’s what happened on Saturday.

In assessing our recent form, I feel that some individuals are in cruise control mode, happy with where we were at a couple of weeks ago and being lazy in terms to training and mental preparation for the games on Saturday.

I also believe that we have got ahead of ourselves as a team, thinking we can just roll up on Saturdays and things will just work out. We have addressed these issues during the week and had a competitive training session on Tuesday and I am confident you will see a more committed and passionate group of sharks on Saturday.

I have no doubt in my mind that we will get back to playing the type of footy we were playing earlier in the year it just has to happen sooner rather then later!

Modbury 12-12-84 defeated Henley 9-10-64.

Goals: Vinnie Rugolo 3, Rusty Biar 2, Seamus McDonald 2, Iszac Thompson 1, James Stewart 1

Message From The Prez

A full weekend of footy – lets get even more!

Hey all you Sharkers

A moderately successful weekend in the Juniors with most teams winning and 2 out of 5 in the Seniors – all of the coaches and players are working hard to turn that around.  We had good attendances at the training and presentation nights and the canteen and BBQs did fine – thanks to all the volunteers who are working so hard to keep the club going so well!

I tell you all something, if you have never been to a Sunday Juniors home game for us, then you need to try it.  We have split rounds with U9s, U11s and U13s playing one week, the next U8s, U10s, U12s and U16s.

The Grasshoppers (U8s/U10s or U9s) start at 9.15am and they burn the dew and frost off the oval – it is great seeing these little kids run around and to have the parents so involved in coaching and showing them how to play – it is awesome!

Then at 10.15 (after a couple of delicious coffees or hot chocolates and of course the world famous HJFC bacon and egg roll) you have U10s or U11s who show a lot more skill and their parents are just as enthusiastic in supporting them.

Then the U13s or U14s start at 11.30 and now you can see some excellent junior footy.  These guys are just so fast and take a great mark, and kick like the adults – they certainly take it seriously although they are at an age when they be a bit embarrassed by their adoring parents – nevertheless a hug goes a long way.

The U16s hit the ground at 1.10pm and these young men have it all – raw strength, spiky head of hair, loads of attitude and some classy skills.

Although it only happens about 5 times for the year, when the U18s have a home game following the U14s, it makes for a fabulously full day of footy.  These guys are built like the proverbial and they have all the stuff the U16s, only they are more hairier and some even smell nice (metrosexuals in training? I wonder).  The game is fast and furious and they all put their bodies on the line time and time again – after all they are invincible (well at least they are never wrong, LOL).

We must get together with the committees of the other clubs and work hard to get the MWJFL and SAAFL talking to each other to ensure that we get more U18s games played right after the U16s.  It really makes for a top day for the club and it means that the canteen and BBQs can be cranked up for the whole day = good turnover for the clubs and tired but satisfied volunteers.

GO THE SHARKS!

Cheers Dos

D’s Match report Round 11 vs North Pines

The D's had been decimated at selection with injuries and promotions to our more fancied A, B & C grade but we got a strong side on the park with a good mix of maturity and youth. We had a lot to play for especially being Mark Altree's 100th game for the club along with bouncing back from our lost to the top side last week.

We dominated from the first bounce and played 4 great quarters for the first time this year. Actually, it was a smashing, a no contest, a non event in the end and there were same great cameo performances by our newer Sharks. Brendon 'bags' Welsh and Gareth 'G' Wales played years beyond there experience.

In the past month our half back line has been unbeatable and has consisted of Horse, Browny and myself with a combined age of 121 years but this week we had young Huddo with us due to Horse being injured. He too played well on his return and Huddo thanks for dying your hair grey to blend in with Browny & myself.

The standout on the day was the great game played by Brad Dittmar who was incredible in the ruck taking on and beating some 8ft caveman from North Pines. Brad was great around the ground taking mark after mark. It was also good to have back Dave Coleman after a long injury layoff. This guy can play and he is a class act in the middle.

With the squad that we have at the D's we will be a force come finals time.

This week’s game is up out Houghton which will have a real country atmosphere if the weather is good but if the weather turns it is like playing in a septic tank.

The D grade jugonaught rolls on and need to keep winning to maintain second spot.

Final Score: Henley 29.12.186 to North Pines 0.3.3

Best players: Dittmar, Hardy, Brown, Coleman, Altree, Welsh

Round 4: Sensational C's go top!

Henley 19.9 (123) defeated SHOC 5.6 (36)

Best: De Munk, Mahney, Rayner, Wilson, Matte

Goals: Rayner 7, Barnes, Pierson 3, Walshe, Mahney 2, Meiers, Eadon 1

The sensational C’s continued on their merry way towards a top 3 position this season with an 87 point mauling of SHOC. With several players coming back down from the B grade and missing the experience of ‘Hooker’ Loveder and ‘Lemaze’ Jeffries there was always the danger of the team not gelling and taking the game too lightly. This could not have been further from the truth as the Sharks raced away to a 4 goal first quarter lead which was extended to a ten goal lead by half time. ‘Rhino’ De Munk was feeding Raynes and Barnesy plenty of the footy early while Mahnes was also performing strongly around half forward, taking some great grabs and crumbing the taller forwards. The Sharks took the foot off the gas in the third, something that will certainly need to be addressed in future weeks, but finished well in the final quarter with the wind to record a comfortable 14 goal win. Matte and Willo rounded out the best players and with plenty of players becoming available over the next few weeks, all positions are up for grabs, demanding al players continue to perform.

Round 3: C GRADE vs ADELAIDE UNI

Henley 14.17 (101) def. Adelaide Uni 9.7 (61)

Best: Pitman, Jeffries, Matte, Mahney, DeMunk, Duessen

Goals: Barnes 5, Rugolo 3, Meiers 2, DeMunk, S Jones, King, Stone 1

Coming off a thumping win, Kingy’s Crew were keen to consolidate a top 3 position with another early season win against long-time rivals, the Uni Blacks. The forecast for rain was not of too great a worry for the Sharks, who were confident that their young brigade would have the legs to run out the game in heavy conditions.

Round 2: C-Grade Vs St. Pauls

Score: Henley 21.18 (144) def St Pauls 8.6 (54)
Best:
Day, Wilson, Ehrlich, Deussen, Matte, Williams
Goals: Ehrlich 9, Barnes 3, Meiers, Wilson 2, King, Sarai, Schwartz, Zammit

The long journey up Grand Junction Road was well worth the effort for Kingy’s Crew, coming away with a 90 point victory against an unorganised St Pauls outfit. After several big losses against the St Pauls in recent years, the Sharks ensured that the scoreboard did the talking, with a seven goal last quarter sealing the match.

Wingers Wrap: Round 1

Game 1 Season 08, finally. After what has seemed an eternity, the first games for points were played by all senior teams this weekend.

Never, in my history at the club, has the off season recruiting & building improvement areas been so busy! The time sacrifices by many has been enormous & it makes me very proud to be part of such a hard working outfit as Henley is.

The committee does not take for granted the generous support & skills supplied by our local fraternity.

Football Training Has Started

Hi everyone!

With new club coach Steve Hall (see separate story) training is now in full swing. Bring your boots and runners on Mondays and Wednesdays ready to start at 6pm. Fridays there is a run along the beach (non compulsary) and a bit of a get together after training.

The first home and away game is April 12 and we hope to have some trial games before then. We will be fielding As, Bs, Cs, Ds and U18s and if interest continues to grow we will also have up to 4 Sunday SuperRules games (over 35s). So there is a spot for everyone to have a game.

We are looking for a head trainer as well as people to assist with strapping, massages, running water etc. So let us know if you or someone you know might be interested - call Wingers (0438 004 782) or Big Pete (0405 456 779)

We are also keen to have people who want to get involved on match day.

GO SHARKS!
