The 2018 season is nearly upon us. Rod Hill and George Charalabidis have been working hard recruiting since last year, players and coaches have been at it since early November and everyone is keen to get started. Our new Football Director Chris Brown has been fantastic in his commitment to the club. Chris has overseen the renovation of the change rooms, establishment of the new gym ( funded entirely by senior players, coaches and volunteer workers ), running the football department and many other things beyond the scope of his job description.

We will be having a season launch during the day on Saturday April 7th at the club, which will be great opportunity for members and supporters to meet some of the new players, chat to some of our loyal regular players and welcome back some old favourites ( look for more details on Facebook or team app in the coming weeks). Our playing group look in great shape and we are excited about the season ahead under A grade coach Jarryd Parker and assistants Ryan Sampson and Iszac Thompson. Sam Heeps has been appointed as the new B grade coach and it is a pleasure to welcome Sam to the Sharks. Sam is the son of a Henley gun, Paul Heeps. Paul was a member of the 1973 and 1983 premiership teams and won a Hone medal which is the Brownlow of the amateur league. I expect we will see Paul out supporting his son after returning from Queensland this year. Browny will coach the C grade again, we will have a new C7 coach, the over 35’s are raring to go again, Slippery Nicol is coaching the Under 18 boys and Karl Dobner is coaching the new Under 18 girls team. We are excited about the prospect of building to a senior women’s team next year to create a pathway for our junior girls.

The Junior program has been extremely successful for a long time and Henley is benefiting throughout the senior ranks. We obviously want players to reach their maximum potential and we celebrate our juniors reaching AFL and SANFL ranks, but we are privileged to have many players progress through junior ranks direct into seniors and we also welcome players returning to Henley at any time. We currently have 281 boys registered to play in 14 boys teams, 133 girls registered to play in 6 girls teams, Auskick will run again (85 last year) and we will have 3 under 7 minis teams (36 players last year). There will be around 550 juniors involved in the junior programs at The Sharks this year. Thank you to John Muir, the Football Director of the juniors, the junior committee, coaches and volunteers who are working really hard to develop such a large group of players and manage day to day running of the juniors. I urge parents to get involved with the club, by volunteering, supporting, making friends and enjoying your time at the Henley Football Club. I have had the pleasure of meeting good people and making many great friendships through my time at Henley as a player and parent.

I am pleased to announce that we have had tremendous support from local business and supporters who sponsor the club. In 2018 we have already had commitment from

The Lockleys Hotel in their 4th year as a major sponsor. Western Sports Ortho & GP Practice are on board again in 2018 as well as Clipsal by Schneider Electric, Paul Eadon Home Loans, Ous Property, Gas Works Findon, Geddes Kitchens, Total Tools Thebarton, Captain Chicken, Cheeky Greek, Jordan Plumbing and many others still to be confirmed. I can announce that CMI Toyota West Terrace have increased their level of sponsorship this year and will be a significant contributor to the club ( A Great White Shark Sponsor ). Nelson Teamwear who are our new supplier of merchandise and jumpers have also come on board as a Great White Shark sponsor, donating 2 sets of jumpers and backing up with some advertising dollars. Sportspower at Glenelg are another new sponsor this year. If you are looking for boots or any sporting equipment please support SPORTSPOWER at Glenelg and mention that you are from The Henley Sharks.  Thank you to David Haskard who has been responsible for bringing the new sponsors to the club. I have been saying for years that sponsorship should be a ten person team. We have now increased our sponsorship team to 3, but still looking for more support. Thank you to the members who have been providing contacts for new sponsors and ideas for sponsorship.

The Henley Heroes are in their 5th year and have been magnificent supporters of the club. The HH committee have already been meeting to discuss events for 2018. I recommend signing up as a Henley Hero ($50 per year ) and if possible a century club member. There are quite a few benefits in being a hero including discount at some of our sponsors, regular hero days and the end of season BBQ with the announcement of the HH most valuable player.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of clubs like ours. We are looking for people to be involved in sub committees ( sponsorship ), assist team managers, set up on match day, match day officials, scoreboard attendants, registrar, working bee participants or simply just returning your glass to the bar. I would like to acknowledge Adam Keenan who will be the BBQ coordinator this year, Peter Lawrence ( bar now open on Friday nights thanks to Peter as a volunteer), Cheryl Barnett and Jake Biddle who are volunteers on the bar management committee, the social committee, football committee and Kym Hicks and his team of trainers. Your committee is,  President Paul Caica, Secretary Vanessa Spaans, Treasurer Brett Dobson, Football Director  Chris Brown, Player reps Damian Rowley, Corey Gray, Corey Battersby, Over 35’s Brad Smyth, Social/ Newsletter Mel Edson. Thank you to Rod Hill for his ongoing support with grants and football department.

Be the person who asks “ What can I do for The Henley Football Club ?”, not “What can the club do for me ?”.
